The location is great & very convenient, its just off the main highway and a street across from the main town center to easily walk down. Parking is just in the front of respective room entrances. Heated beds, hall, well stocked kitchen. Overall value for money.

Lovely room with view out over gardens and pond, and what was probably beautiful scenery which due to the weather we could not see. The included continental style breakfast was very nice. The young German lady Fransisca who appeared to do everything at the hotel was really lovely, helpful and friendly, a great front of house asset.

Franz Josef is a must do destination when travelling in the South Island, especially if you like the outdoors. Got up early and travelled to Lake Matheson to watch the sunrise - possibly the best experience in all our years of travelling. The cafe at Lake Matheson was brilliant as well and Alice May restaurant in Franz Josef was brilliant for dinner.

A must see on any New Zealand itinerary, but one day is sufficient. Perfect for adventurous young people who like walking, not so much for older persons. The helicopter ride was bit of a rip-off as the weather closed in and we could not land on the glacier. Although they did give us a little refund, it was not up to our expectations and very expensive 20 minute ride.

Beautiful World Heritage site with exquisite natural flora...
Beautiful World Heritage site with exquisite natural flora and fauna. The walks were amongst the most scenic and beautiful we’ve ever experienced. Only downside, which I feel needs to be more clearly explained to visitors, is that the glaciers themselves can only be seen and viewed from the lookout points if it is a clear day without low hanging cloud. We were disappointed to not actually see the Franz Josef Glacier nor the Fox Glacier from the fartherest reach of the walks. Environmentally, we were not prepared to fly/chopper to see the glaciers from the air. Nevertheless, the walks themselves are a must do, driving through the region is gob-smackingly beautiful and the walk around Lake Matheson a must see.

Our helihike was cancelled due to weather, so we did a quad bike in the rain. IT WAS AWESOME! We smiled for the entire two hours.
There is a sweet chapel for quiet and reflection.
We never saw the glaciers as it rained for three days straight which was so sad.
The grocery and a few restaurants were enough to find something to eat.

We were unlucky with the weather, as there was low cloud and some rain. We took a couple of walks to see the glacier from viewing points which were really good. Paths were very good, not muddy, and there were signs to explain the ecology and history.

A small town with a couple of shops and plenty pubs/restaurants. The glacier is 7kms from the town - drive to the car park and then there’s a short walk to the viewing area - you’ll need binoculars or a long lens to truly appreciate the beauty of the glacier. Fox Glacier is 30 mins away and again there’s a pretty uphill walk to a viewing area. You can get a helicopter onto the glacier but they are $$$.
Lake Mathewson is worth visiting while in Fox, park at the car park and walk 30/40 mins to the jetty. Beautiful especially at sunset but use bug spray as there are lots of midgies!
We were notified that due to this hotel temporarily closing for winter they had changed us to their Te Waonui Forest Retreat instead and it was amazing.
From the moment we arrived the staff were so lovely we were greeted with a hot towel and welcome drink our bags were taken straight to our beautiful room, which was so warm and welcoming.
We dined in their restaurant for dinner and breakfast and both meals were fantastic.
We would definitely stay again if we returned to Franz Josef
If only we could have stayed longer.
Literally this is an oasis of tranquility after visiting the Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers.
A beautiful, garden setting on the north side of Franz Josef.
We sat out on the decking overlooking the pond late afternoon listening to birdsong.
The rooms were amazing, spacious, well planned with a huge bed and large bathroom.
We paid for continental breakfast and were very happy the selection.
Larg, clean room on the second floor with a huge window. The dense foliage out the window made it seem as if you were in a treehouse. The receptionist was very friendly and helpful. She provided a large umbrella for our use and even offered to help with our bags. The location was perfect for the small town of Franz Joseph and just a short 10 minute drive to the hike to view Franz Joseph glacier.
Cute cottage just minutes from downtown Franz Josef. Nice having a separate bedroom. The bathroom is a bit small but clean. Kitchen well stocked, clean and nice having a small bottle of milk for morning coffee. The host even texted us that we could check in early when the room was ready. Nice touch.
The room was spacious and had a gorgeous little patio surrounded by greenery. The hotel staff were very friendly and happy to guide us on the local spots to eat/drink and all of the different glacier walks. The bed was comfortable and there were plenty of blankets to keep us warm during the cold night.
A spacious studio unit with comfy beds and very clean and tidy. Perfect location and an easy one minute walk to shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants. If you're wanting to go hiking, it's a great location and close to the Franz Josef glacier too! Highly recommend staying at Alpine Glacier Motel.
Really helpful staff, excellent location (Franz Josef is a tiny 'town'), decent enough facilities, plenty of opportunity and space to socialise, free breakfast and (especially) veg soup every evening much appreciated. Can't fault it tbh, great value for money in NZ.
Great location and super service for sightseeing ideas for both the glaciers. Warm heaters in the room and bathroom and comfortable bed. They did our washing load for $5 which was a bonus as all dried and delivered to the room while we were out having a beer.
Fantastic motel in the heart of Franz Josef. Large rooms with everything you need, our family had a very comfortable stay. Staff were very kind and helpful. Highly recommended. Perfect if your on a road trip with a car as you can park right outside the room
Easy check-in, excellent location for walking 2 mins to town center, very nice accommodation and space in Cottage #17, and an incredible view of Franz Josef from our dining room window!
A frisbee golf course in town an added plus!
The staff was great. They helped in our laundry when the main laundry equipment was broken. Great view of the Glacier when clear. Rooms are generally spacious and bathrooms were clean. Nice location just outside the main town.
This is by far the best hotel in the Franz Josef area. We really enjoyed our stay here. Staff were friendly and helpful. Rooms were clean and comfortable. Location is central to shops and restaurants. All good!
Becca at the front desk was great! Her communication was well done and professional.
She also told us on a rainy day to go see a movie on the glaciers, etc The movie was fabulous.
We were a family of 4. Kids have their separate beds and the room has a great view of the glacier. The kitchenette was well equipped and the jacuzzi was a cherry on top
Such a gorgeous chalet and stunning location! Views of Franz Josef glacier from your chalet window! Very peaceful location, a lovely escape from the busyness of travel.
Rainforest Retreat is absolutely beautiful! the whole grounds are set in amongst the bush with cute little walkways everywhere and hidden gems along the trails.
Check in was quick and staff were helpful. The hotel was in a convenient location and the kitchen facilities were large and good (except during peak times)
